Choice of bottom material to reptiles

The choice of bottom material for reptiles depends on the type of reptile you have and what is best for its specific needs. Here are some common options for bottom materials to reptiles:

  • Sand: Sand is a common bottom material for desertsnde reptiler like lizards and snakes. It is important to use fine sand and not rough, as coarse sand can irritate the eyes and respiratory tract on certain reptiles. However, sand can cause problems if your reptile accidentally swallows it when it feeds or licks its body parts.
  1. Soil and sand mix: A mixture between about 60% soil and 40% sand is an excellent mix for species that digs or that need a humid climate. It is also possible to supplement with other bottom materials.
  2. Coconut fiber: Coconut fiber is a good choice for reptiles that live in humid environments, such as certain types of frogs or lizards. It is also an environmentally friendly alternative because it is made of coconut peel residues.

  3. Bark: Bark is another common bottom material for reptiles that need a humid environment. It is a natural product that helps keep the humidity high in the terrarium.

  4. Paper: Paper is easy to use and replace, and is a good alternative for smaller reptiles that require a clean environment. However, paper cannot be used as permanent bottom material and cannot provide enough natural structure and environment for reptiles.

  5. Clay or lecules: clay or lecules can be used as bottom materials for reptiles that need a dry and warm environment or as a drainage layer at the bottom of humid climates.

Whatever the bottom material you choose, it is important to replace it regularly and keep the terrarium clean to avoid illness and infections. You should also ensure that the bottom material does not pose a risk to your reptile, such as causing digestive problems or suffocation if swallowed.
